GOD Most High
Do we comprehend what God owns?

How can we understand or explain fully the sovereignty of God? Fill yourself with wonder by meditating on the glorious beauty of God by contemplating the majesties of heaven and earth.
You know instinctively that He exceeds His creation. Yet, if creation fills you with wonder, how much more will He? Zophar had it right,
“Can you search out the deep things of God?
Can you find out the limits of the Almighty?
They are higher than heaven—what can you do?
Deeper than Sheol—what can you know?
Their measure is longer than the earth
And broader than the sea.”
(Job 11.7–9)
Job added an amen when he declared,
“Indeed these are the mere edges of His ways,
And how small a whisper we hear of Him!
But the thunder of His power who can understand?”
(Job 26.14)
The psalmist agreed with those two men,
Great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised;
And His greatness is unsearchable.
(Psa 145.3)
Let us look at the sovereignty of God. However, whatever we say is like examining one grain of sand and from that expounding on the beauties of seashores worldwide!
I want to fill your soul with wonder, showing you how God possesses heaven and earth, that you might let Him possess something else.
Melchizedek Announced the Sovereignty of God
Genesis 14 shows a meeting between Melchizedek and Abraham, when the latter returned from a battle. Here we get a glimmer of, the mere edges of, a whisper of the sovereignty of God as we listen to both men confess God’s sovereignty,
Then Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine; he was the priest of God Most High. And he blessed him and said:
“Blessed be Abram of God Most High,
Possessor of heaven and earth;
And blessed be God Most High,
Who has delivered your enemies into your hand.”And he gave him a tithe of all. Now the king of Sodom said to Abram, “Give me the persons, and take the goods for yourself.” But Abram said to the king of Sodom, “I have raised my hand to the LORD, God Most High, the Possessor of heaven and earth, that I will take nothing, from a thread to a sandal strap, and that I will not take anything that is yours, lest you should say, ‘I have made Abram rich’—except only what the young men have eaten, and the portion of the men who went with me: Aner, Eshcol, and Mamre; let them take their portion” (Gen 14.18–24).
Think on the titles both men, and Moses in introducing the conversation, gave to Yahweh the Creator.
Yahweh Is “God” Most High
What does it mean to say He is God? A dictionary definition might say: He is the perfect, omnipotent, omniscient originator and ruler of the universe. That is another way of saying He is God because He is sovereign over all.
Every time you call Him God, you affirm His limitless sovereignty, and you affirm that no one surpasses Him, no one made Him, He has neither beginning nor end, He does not answer to anyone, All answer to Him, and He will not pass on His sovereignty in death, because He will not die, for He is eternal.
Moreover, you affirm that He is God Most High.
He cannot be reached by anyone, unless He decrees it. He is the Ultimate Authority. Everyone and everything is subject to Him. Even those who do not wish to acknowledge His most highness will eventually confess it. As Paul said of God the Son in Philippians 2 when Paul quoted Isaiah 45.23, “Therefore God also has highly exalted [Jesus] and given Him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father” (Phi 2.9–11).
The Father and the Son, along with the Spirit, are so high that even their enemies shall one day acknowledge it.
God Possesses Heaven and Earth
How can we comprehend what He possesses and rules?
Can you always take care of your property? What is your property to the square miles of your County? What is your County to the square miles of your state? What is your state to the square miles of your nation? What is your nation to the 197,000,000 square miles of Earth? What is the earth to heaven?
How much does God possess and rule? We cannot even picture all of our county in our minds simultaneously.
He is the Ultimate Landlord! While we might own a piece of property, laws still exist that prevent us from doing absolutely everything we want.
Yet, who shall prevent God from doing what He wants? He does what He pleases and no one can restrain Him as Psalm 24.1 says,
The earth is the LORD’S, and all its fullness,
The world and those who dwell therein.
(Psa 24.1)
Can we describe the dominion and the sovereignty of God? I do not believe we have the knowledge or skill to do it!
Does He Possess Your Heart?
There is one place where God’s sovereignty occurs only by the choice of another. He possesses heaven and earth automatically, but He chooses not to possess something else automatically. Psalm 8 makes the amazing declaration that God would even think of us. Why is He mindful of puny little creatures like us when He possesses heaven and earth? David wondered the same thing,
O LORD, our Lord,
How excellent is Your name in all the earth,
Who have set Your glory above the heavens!…When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers,
The moon and the stars, which You have ordained,
What is man that You are mindful of him,
And the son of man that You visit him?
For You have made him a little lower than the angels,
And You have crowned him with glory and honor.
(Psa 8.1, 3–5)
Isaiah 57 says that He wants to have sovereignty in our hearts, even as He does in the heavens and the earth, but He leaves that choice up to us,
For thus says the High and Lofty One
Who inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy:
“I dwell in the high and holy place,
With him who has a contrite and humble spirit,
To revive the spirit of the humble,
And to revive the heart of the contrite ones.”
(Isa 57.15)
Sadly, it is easier for Him to possess heaven and earth, than the hearts of men and women. All creation praises and submits to the Sovereign God of the Universe, except for humans.
We want to be in charge and we will fight Him with all that is within us.
The sun did not crucify the Creator, but hid its face from the creatures who did. The earth did not murder the Maker, but it shook violently at the evil deed done on its back. It was the highest of God’s material creation that brutalized the possessor of heaven and earth.
Yet, a few do decide to honor Him, to praise Him, to believe Him, to obey Him. They are the ones who give Him what He wants most in all of heaven and earth, their hearts.
He desires to possess our hearts through the gift of His Son Jesus Christ. What is it that the Father wants you to believe about His Son? He is the Lord. Do you know what you confess with that statement? When you confess Jesus as Lord, you confess that He possesses heaven and earth, as well as your heart, your life, your thinking, your wishes, and that He is God Most High.
You confess that He is your everything, He is your all.
What did it mean for Abraham that God possesses heaven and earth? Abraham had won a battle. He confessed that God gave the victory. Abraham did not base his life on what men did for him, but on what God did.
That is the significance for us. Every material blessing comes from God (Jam 1.17), and every spiritual blessing is in the heavenly places in Christ (Eph 1.3).
Does He Possess Your Heart?
